S

s.t.

Abbreviation for sine tempore (Lat. Without time). Teaching events which have this prefix always begin punctually. There is no “academic quarter” here.

Scholarship

Stipendium. A scholarship is an award of financial aid for a student to further their education. Scholarships are awarded based upon various criteria, which usually reflect the values and purposes of the donor or founder of the award. Scholarship money is not required to be repaid.

Scientific Employee

Wissenschaftlicher Angestellter. Scientific employees are practicing scientific activities at Universities or Research Institutions in range of their degrees.

Script

Skript. Written transcript of a lecture.

Semester

Half a year. The academic year is normally divided into the Winter Semester (WS) and Summer Semester (SS). The semester includes the time where courses and lectures take place as well as when they do not take place.

Semester Abroad

Auslandssemester. Studying abroad is the act of a student pursuing educational opportunities in a country other than one's own.

Semester Holidays

Semesterferien. Lecture or course free time between semester. Can be used for internships or learning.

Semester Ticket

Semesterticket. Some universities have introduced a reasonable priced ticket which can be used on public transport in combination with your student identity card.

Semester Week Times

Semesterwochenstunden. The amount of hours for a teaching event in one. Preparation time for a course is not included in this.

Seminar

As opposed to a lecture has active participation from students. Amount of students participating in a seminar is restricted. However, study rooms, library areas in faculties are also categorised as Seminars.

Staatsexamen

The Staatsexamen is a German government licensing examination that future e.g. doctors and jurists have to pass to be allowed to work in their profession. The examination is generally organized by government examination agencies which are under the authority of the responsible ministry.

Standard Study Period

Regelstudienzeit. The period of time in which a course of study is supposed to be completed.

Student Administration

Studentenwerk. Administrative department at a university which is responsible for running the cafeterias on the university campus as well as the distribution of rooms in the student dormitories and their maintenance. In addition, the Studentenwerk offers counseling in questions of law, psychology or social issues.

Summer Courses

Sommerkurse. Summer courses, Summer schools or a program generally sponsored by a school or a school district, or provided by a private company, that provides lessons and activities during the summer vacation. Participation in summer schools has been shown to have substantial beneficial effects on educational progress.

Summer Semester

Sommersemester. Summer term means the period commencing immediately after the Easter holiday and ending with the school year.
