New partnership programmes at University of Hohenheim

As of 2009 students of economics at the University of Hohenheim will be able to add an extra year to their studies and obtain a dual degree at one of seven partner universities in Europe. The relevant universities are all part of the European HERMES network of twelve heavy-weight schools of economic science, including Paris-Sorbonne and Strasburg universities in France, Spain’s Alcalà and Granada universities, Heriot-Watt-University in Edinburgh, Scotland, Poland’s Jagiellonische University in Cracow, Russia’s MGIMO in Moscow and Italy’s University of Pavia. In return the Hermes network will enable undergraduates from all its partner institutions to undertake one year of international study in Hohenheim and will recognise their academic achievements in full.

Beginning in 2010 it will also be possible to study for dual degrees with American universities and, just a little later, with universities in Asia, according to Prof. Dr. Hans J. Tümmers from the Hohenheim Management School. His university also aims to set up dual degrees with universities in Venice/Italy and Lausanne/Switzerland. Agreements should be signed and sealed with the first seven partner institutions by the end of June.

“We believe this arrangement will not only be extremely attractive for German students, but also for international students who would like to study in Germany,” emphasises Prof. Tümmers. The HERMES (Higher Education and Research in Management of European UniversitieS) network encompasses top addresses in the economic sciences which attach outstanding importance to research as well as teaching. The network represents a counterweight to the purely teaching role played by business schools. Apart from the University of Hohenheim the other network members in Germany include the universities of Tübingen, Erlangen-Nürnberg and Dresden. The University of Hohenheim is a small but highly specialised university which last year found its way into the leading group of German universities in the Centre for Higher Education Development’s (CHE) research rankings for business administration. The University intends to sharpen its international profile even more in the years ahead.
