New master’s degree in complex international construction and infrastructure projects
Stuttgart University of Applied Sciences (HFT) will be making an important addition to its range of project management courses by launching its "International Infrastructure Management & Technology" (IITM) degree in the 2009/10 winter semester. The objective is to improve the structure and management of complex, international building and infrastructure projects. The University of Applied Sciences (HFT) has been running the successful English-language master’s degree course in “International Project Management" since 2001. The degree course has so far focused on “building project management” (IBPM). The entire degree is designed for engineers, architects and business administration graduates with proven professional experience who wish to acquire additional technical know-how and management expertise. Intercultural competence is now generally recognised as playing an extremely important role in multinational teams.
The degree offered in Stuttgart reflects the observation that the world’s population, particularly in the second and third worlds, appears to becoming increasingly urbanised. More and more megacities with populations of 10 million people or more are emerging and placing ever greater demands on infrastructure systems. Drinking and process water for irrigation purposes are already extremely scarce commodities. Waste water is often perfunctorily treated or left completely untreated and allowed to pollute rivers and lakes thereby making them practicably unusable for any purpose whatever. Waste disposal and recycling is also extremely inadequate in many cities. The CO2 discussion and rising energy costs also demand new energy generation and distribution solutions.
The advanced degree offered by the HFT will enable students to acquire sustainability expertise in the fields of environmental issues, energy consumption, traffic, efficiency and social welfare responsibility. Students on the “International Project Management” master’s degree course also have the option of taking part in an additional MBA programme in cooperation with the John Moore University in Liverpool, UK.
