Cardiological societies want to open doors for up and coming scientists

The German Cardiology Society and the American College of Cardiology (ACC) aim to work very closely together in the future to promote the exchange of young scientists and to make better use of both partners' professional knowledge. "In the future we will be able to open doors for good post-doctoral students on both sides of the Atlantic," explains the initiator of the cooperative venture, Professor Christoph Bode, medical director of the Department for Cardiology and Angiology at the University Medical Center in Freiburg. To date, exchanges of young professionals working in the field of cardiology have almost all been the result of private initiatives. The support offered by both scientific societies should, it is hoped, significantly improve the prospects for such exchanges in the future.

Closer collaboration with colleagues in the USA will be facilitated by Professor Bode's ambition to open the first Chapter of the ACC on the European continent in Germany. The new “Chapter” is to all intents and purposes a working party within the German society which allows its members to access special internet content, lectures, educational tools and other information material relevant to their area of specialism. Professor Bode is pressing ahead with the foundation of the new Chapter in his role as a member of the German Cardiology Society's programme commission and as the representative of the ACC. The overall objective is to make the best possible use of the specialist know-how on both sides of the ocean and to ensure that knowledge is available for use by practising cardiologists much faster than has been the case in the past.

Professsor Bode emphasises that the collaboration between the two excellent research networks will be hugely beneficial for the treatment of cardiac patients in Germany. The American College of Cardiology is a scientific society based in Washington D.C. whose founders, when the college was founded in 1949, included two German doctors.
