For the second time in a row students from the University of Pforzheim
have won the German Fashion Industry Foundation's (SDBI) "European Fashion Award"
. Kristina Mora (fashion) and Alexander Brenk (visual communication) were awarded first prize for their 15-part "We Are" yoga collection at the world's largest sporting goods trade show, the ISPO in Munich. This year's "FASH 2012", which also attracts avid international competitors, awards prize money of €4,000 and a six-month paid placement with Gore Bike Wear.
"Kristina Mora and Alexander Brenk have brought a whole new perspective to the economically strong but largely uninspired and conventional market for yoga wear," according to the jury. The prize winners employ a language of modern design which captures the spirit of the times while taking on board women's desire for attractive fashion wear as well as functional and health aspects. "They have managed to achieve something which often enough proves elusive for even the best of designers working in saturated markets: a relevant product which can claim to occupy a justified position on the market", was how the jury explained their decision. With temperature regulating clothing, breathable materials and very few ultrasonically bonded seams, the clothing gives its wearers a feeling of wellbeing and movement when doing yoga exercises.
The two young designers (both in the 6th semester) and their yoga collection also introduced considerable turbulence into the prize structure at this year's award ceremony. Instead of the usual three categories, the jury topped up its prize money for the designer duo from Pforzheim at the expense of the second and third prizes.
