University co-operation between Baden-Württemberg and Malaysia to be extended
Frankenberg also pointed out the model character of this co-operation commenting on the fact that this exchange Agreement has attracted a great deal of interest in Malaysia and is seen as a model for similar agreements by other federal states. The extraordinary success of this exchange programme and the attraction of the education region of Baden-Württemberg is mirrored in the fact that over half of all Malaysian students in Germany are in the German southwest.
The Agreement is widely based on the existing agreement between the Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts with the Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) in Shah Alam Malaysia, closed in 1997. The programme includes German courses for scholarship holders in Malaysia, an internship at the German Malaysian Institute (GMI) in Kuala Lumpur, an introductory course on Germany and specific supervision for the students during the course. Since 1998, Baden-Württemberg has seen a total of 206 Malaysian students here. In the summer semester 2004 there were 66 Malaysian government scholarship holders in twelve university of applied sciences locations in the state.
