Health Insurance in GermanyYou will need to medically insure yourself in Germany and adequate health insurance is obligatory for admission. Students can insure themselves at a favourable student rate during their studies until they are 30 years of age. There are three types of scenarios concerning health insurance: Scenario 1:The student is insured in his home country, with which there is a social insurance agreement. These countries include:
With the Form E111 or E128, which students have to bring with them from their home country when they come to Germany, they have a claim to urgently required services in the event of an (acute) illness in Germany. The students must submit the E111 or E128 form to a statutory medical insurance company in Germany (e.g. AOK, BEK, DAK, GEK, IKK, TK), which they can select themselves. Please note: To enroll at an institution of higher education it is necessary for students to prove that they have a medical insurance cover or have been exempted from insurance obligations by a statutory health insurance scheme. Scenario 2:The student is sufficiently medically insured in his home country, with which no social insurance agreement has been concluded. Under these conditions the student can be exempted from obligatory student insurance by a medical insurance company. However, the health insurance companies do not check to see whether the existing insurance is sufficient. Students decide themselves whether they consider the insurance coverage to be adequate or not. In case of doubt, a student health insurance policy should always be taken out in Germany, as exemption from the insurance obligation in Germany cannot be cancelled (please see case group 3). If you are unsure then ask at the Student Union or International Office at the institute of higher education. Scenario 3: There is no social insurance accord with the home country of the student, and the student is not adequately insured there. The student is urged to take out medical insurance coverage in Germany. If students do an internship, which is often required in their studies or when they enrol in Germany, they can be insured at the more favourable student rate. Rates: The monthly premium is currently Euro 54,78 (until 31.12.2008) including nursing care insurance (see above). Since 2008 all health insurance companies have to offer the same fees. Students who take part in an exchange programme can enroll at a higher education institution within the framework of a limited allowance and take out a student health insurance cover on this basis. Students over 30:If you are aged 30 or over you cannot be covered by statutory health insurance. However we strongly advise you to take private health insurance as costs for medical care are very expensive in Germany. Family insurance: If members of your immediate family accompany you to Germany, they may in certain circumstances also be insured for no additional charge. In order to qualify for free insurance, members of your family must have their place of abode or habitual residence in Germany, it is essential that they are not required, to pay health contributions themselves, and they must not exceed certain income limits. The majority of insurance companies offer special rates for foreign students studying abroad although the rates for a standard medical insurance are the same everywhere.
