Graduate SchoolsGraduate schools are a fairly new phenomenon in Germany, but already well respected in the scientific community. Since 2006 a couple of graduate schools have been established in Baden-Württemberg. Situated in Freiburg, Heidelberg, Tübingen, Karlsruhe, Konstanz, Mannheim, Stuttgart and Ulm they offer PhD programmes that are mainly conducted in English to German and international students. Compared to the prevalent system of accomplishing a PhD in Germany by Independent Research, these graduate schools offer a structured programme to their doctoral students. The curriculum usually combines courses and lectures – often held by international guest scientists – and seminars training additional skills such as management, language courses or communication trainings. The graduate schools therefore give the opportunity to reach a PhD degree through individual research work that is accomplished in an international and collective research environment that strongly fosters the scientific exchange among the students and the teaching and research staff. The programmes are usually carried out by a network of several different university departments or research institutions and therefore often have an interdisciplinary approach. Each graduate school has its own study structure, application procedure and deadline.
