Entrance Qualifications for Universities in Baden-Württemberg

To qualify for entry to a higher education institution in Germany, you have to fulfil certain criteria. These vary according to the type of institution. All applicants (German or foreign) must hold a suitable entrance qualification. A foreign qualification must be equivalent to a German entrance qualification of Abitur or Hochschulreifeprüfung (German matriculation).

Students with entrance qualifications which are only partly comparable to German qualifications may be asked to pass an assessment test (Feststellungsprüfung). This is carried out by the dean of the relevant university.

The easiest way to see if your qualification is recognised is to check on the website of the appropriate higher education institute and then click on the course they are offering. Most of higher education institutions show you which qualifications they need as well as offering an application form to download. Questions can be directed to the university by E-Mail.

A basic prerequisite for anyone wishing to join an international degree course is proof of English language proficiency. This varies from TOEFL to the Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency but depends on the institution.

Applicants wishing to study courses in German will be asked to take the DSH test (Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang ausländischer Studienbewerber). You will be exempt from this test if you have one of the following qualifications:

  • A Major or Minor Language Certificate issued by the Goethe Institute
  • A Level II Language Certification issued by the Conference of Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs (KMK)
  • An Upper Secondary Level Test Certificate issued by the Goethe Institute.
