Baden-Wuerttemberg Cooperative State University

Combining academic studies with practical training in companies and corporations is unique to Baden-Württemberg. The Baden-Wuerttemberg Cooperative State University (Duale Hochschule Baden-Württemberg – DHBW) educates about 25,000 students in co-operation with more than 8,000 companies today.
Taking the 30-year success story of the University of Cooperative Education (Berufsakademie) into account, the German state of Baden-Württemberg has raised the university’s legal status on March 1st, 2009 and changed the institution’s name to the present Baden-Wuerttemberg Cooperative State University.
Changing the institution’s status is intended to ensure the national and international recognition of this form of higher education which Bosch, Daimler and Alcatel Lucent already pioneered in the early 1970s.

The Baden-Wuerttemberg Cooperative State University with its main seat in Stuttgart is the first university in Germany to integrate academic studies and work experience. Like the other universities, it is a legal entity of public law and simultaneously a state institution. Its trademarks will be the structural characteristics of the University of Cooperative Education, in particular, the participation of training companies and institutions and the dual learning principle of studies. The eight main locations and three branch campuses with their areas of responsibility and close networking with the regional economy are the pillars of the Cooperative State University.

At the Baden-Wuerttemberg Cooperative State University, companies and state universities help students qualify for their professional careers. Companies provide students´ practical training and state universities provide the theoretical knowledge required. The result is a new form of university education that imparts both theoretical knowledge and workplace training.

The Baden-Wuerttemberg Cooperative State University provides degree programs in the fields of:

•    economics
•    technology
•    social sciences
•    30 sub-related specialties

Degrees awarded are the same as those awarded at the Universities of Applied Sciences. Curricula are clearly structured and compact. After only three years students are eminently employable in their fields of specialisation, with nearly all of them employed before their final examinations.

Fast-rising student enrolment figures are testimony to the popularity of this innovative form of higher education.
