The Baden-Württemberg Scholarship

An international exchange program for qualified German and non-German students.

The Baden-Württemberg Scholarship

Nowadays, international experience, language skills and understanding of other cultures are more important for school, studies and career than ever before.
The Baden-Württemberg Scholarship programme therefore provides specific support to enable qualified young people to take part in a placement abroad and so to broaden their personal horizons. Each year, exchanges involving about 1,200 scholarship holders are "promoted". That makes the Baden-Württemberg Scholarship a unique programme in Germany.

Objective

The objective of the Baden-Württemberg Scholarship for university students is to promote the international exchange of highly qualified German (outgoing) and foreign (incoming) students. Moreover, the programme aims to encourage links between the universities in Baden-Württemberg and their foreign partners and to develop and strengthen theses bonds on a reciprocal basis.

The Program is open to all post-graduates and students enrolled at a state university or university of cooperative education in Baden-Württemberg regardless of their chosen subject. It applies to these candidates who wish to spend a limited study period at a partner institution of higher education abroad. Only highly competent students will be considered. The term “German students” includes all students enrolled here and aiming to complete their degree programmes in the country (regardless of their country of origin).

Selection of study location abroad

The choice of the study location abroad is determined following consultation between the universities/universities of cooperative education of Baden-Württemberg and the faculties or scientists in their foreign counterparts. As a rule, agreements should be made on an exchange for an academic year and with exemption from tuition fees.

Duration of Scholarship and amount of support

The duration of a scholarship is a minimum of four months and a maximum of 11 months. For undergraduate students (stage I studies, bachelor’s degree), a scholarship amounting to €400 - €800 can be granted per month. Post-graduate students (pre-diploma qualification or intermediate examination + 2 semesters, master’s degree, doctorate) can receive up to €1,200 per month. The duration of the scholarship lasts 3 to 6 months for students at universities of co-operative education and amounts to €100 - €800 (scholarships will only be awarded during the theory phases).

Further information

If you require further information, please contact the International Office (Akademisches Auslandsamt) or those responsible for international affairs at your institution of higher education.

The Foundation

The Baden-Württemberg Stiftung, formerly known as Landesstiftung Baden-Württemberg, was formed from the former Landesbeteiligungen Baden-Württemberg GmbH. It is a non-profit, limited liability company. The assets of almost 2.4 billion euros administered by it are mainly placed in investment funds, real estate and company holdings. According to the Association of German Foundations (Bundesverband Deutscher Stiftungen), it was the second-largest foundation under private law in Germany in 2008.

The aim of the Baden-Württemberg Stiftung is to strengthen and secure the sustainability of the state of Baden-Württemberg through not-for-profit projects. The Baden-Württemberg Stiftung has been implementing non-for-profit programs and projects in the areas of science & research, training and social responsibility & culture since 2001. The projects range from language programs for pre-school children, programs for integration through social engagement, the “University of Applied Sciences and Universities of Cooperative Education Sustainability Program” and “Opportunities = Equality. Equal Opportunities for Women and Men” to research projects in the areas of life sciences, optical technologies and nanosciences.
